Collage Art Alliance

International Alliance of Collage Organizations : http://alliance.artducollage.com

Collage Art Alliance (International Alliance of Collage Art Organizations) brings together the only three international organizations to federate collage artists having one – or several – annual exhibitions.

These organizations are: the National Collage Society created and managed by Gretchen Bierbaum (U.S.A.), the International Collage Exchange, created and managed by Dale Copeland (New Zealand), and of course Artcolle, created and managed by Pierre Jean Varet (France).

The three organizations share their experience, knowledge and expertise and by combining their efforts make collage art known to many people worldwide as well as offering collage artists living anywhere the opportunity to take part of their annual exhibitions and events.

It's an alliance of friendship, mutual respect and passion for collage art. The common aim of the three organizations is to raise interest in collage art, the art form they've been promoting individually for many years.

In addition to the website, where collage artists can find both information about exhibitions and each organisation's news, the Alliance welcomes the opportunity to consider other communal art projects with similar objectives.

DALE DEVEREUX COPELAND
www.outofsight.co.nz
Dale Copeland is a well-known collage and assemblage artist of New Zealand.  You can see her art on the website www.dalecopeland.co.nz
For her, the appeal and the challenge of collage and assemblage is the juxtaposition of the dissimilar, putting together different elements, each of which tells its own story.
Together they make a statement which is, or can be, more than their separate words.
For many years Dale has run the International Collage Exhibition/Exchange.  Each year more than 150 artists each send 13 collages to her in New Zealand.  One from each artist is offered for sale at an exhibition in New Zealand and also from a website, one other is exhibited and then donated to an art institution somewhere in the world, and for the others an exchange is made and a mixed parcel of collages sent back to each artist.  An attempt is made to make exchanges between artists of similar skills and interests.
One collage from each artist can be seen on the website  www.outofsight.co.nz

Copeland was educated as a mathematician and nuclear physicist but turned to art 22 years ago.  She has exhibited widely for many years, and her art has taken her to many countries in the world.  (As an example, she met Pierre Jean Varet, the writer of this book, at a collage symposium in Bulgaria, half a world away from New Zealand).  She regards herself as the most fortunate person in the world (and she also has a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Taekwon-Do).

Copeland runs a website for artists.  Called Virtual Tart, it has been running for more than 12 years and every month it shows a new exhibition.    Each April the exhibition is the International Collage exchange.  That website is  www.virtual.tart.co.nz
GRETCHEN BIERBAUM
www.nationalcollage.com
Gretchen Bierbaum is the first artist in the 98-year history of collage to combine scenes of a city using the regional newspaper.  "Cities, like humans, have their own individual personalities.  The original concept that I created, combining scenes of a city with the local newspaper logotype and related articles, captures the character of the city.  My transparent watercolor paintings over newspaper collage allow pieces to fall into place like a puzzle, giving an innovative picture of the city's personality."

One of her collages was commissioned by the Navy League and hangs in the captain's dining room in a nuclear submarine.  Another one is in the permanent collection of the Butler Museum in Ohio.  Individual collectors include two major league ball players and the former President of Panama.

Gretchen teaches collage workshops nationally and specializes in image transfer.
She has developed 20 different techniques for moving an image from one surface to another creating an antique or abstract design.

The artist is Founder and President of the National Collage Society, a national art foundation with 15 regional groups in the USA and artists in 5 countries.
She is the author of "Collage in All Dimensions" published in                        2004,  ISBN 0-9771094-0-2

Following study
in Mexico and Iran, she completed her BA and MA at Kent State University.  Formal education combined with extensive foreign travel to 30 countries bestows a world-wide vision to her works of art.
